ANSWER
Yang Berhormat Menteri Sumber-Sumber Utama dan Pelancongan
Negara Brunei Darussalam began farming blue shrimp or rostris shrimp in 2000. However, at the end of 2017, after experiencing in-breeding issues, the rostris shrimp farming industry in the country faced slow shrimp growth rates and shrimp disease infection issues that drastically affected farmed shrimp production. Therefore, the Ministry formulated a policy for marine shrimp farming by allowing vannamei shrimp or white shrimp as an additional species to be farmed in this country since the end of 2019. The study for the formulation of this policy was carried out comprehensively by taking into account economic, welfare and biosecurity aspects to fill the gap in the supply of shrimp raw materials to processing factories in order to meet local and overseas markets.
One of the measures to ensure that the production of Udang Rostris in this country resumes is through efforts to attract foreign direct investors to develop this Udang Rostris industry. A Government-Linked Company (GLC), namely a joint venture company with foreign investors, is carrying out Udang Rostris hatchery and breeding activities. These Udang Rostris fry are imported from Austria and may also be crossbred with local Udang Rostris fry in the medium and long term. Production from the said company is expected to increase this year through the addition of a new 12.5-hectare site which has begun operations at the Serasa Fisheries Centre site to farm Udang Rostris using automation-based aquaculture technology and the use of more environmentally friendly solar photovoltaic, which can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The production of Udang Rostris fry by the said Government-Linked Company at present is only sufficient to be supplied to the existing ponds at the sites owned by the said company. However, the company plans to supply Udang Rostris fry to local shrimp farmers as soon as the company succeeds in increasing the output of the said Udang Rostris fry.
