YANG BERHORMAT AWANG AMRAN BIN HAJI MAIDIN

QUESTION:

YANG BERHORMAT AWANG AMRAN BIN HAJI MAIDIN asked the MINISTER OF HOME AFFAIRS to state what efforts the Ministry is making to preserve and sustain the beauty of Kampong Ayer, which was once a pride of the country with its uniqueness and often visited by dignitaries and foreign tourists, considering the condition of the houses that are now old and neglected?

YANG BERHORMAT MENTERI HAL EHWAL DALAM NEGERI

ANSWER:

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and greetings to all.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Yang Di-Pertua and Your Honourable Members blessed by Allah, whom peramba/Kaola/I respect,

  1. I am pleased to share that in 2024, the population in Kampong Ayer was 7,793 compared to 28,000 in 1998. Although, in essence, the population in Kampong Ayer is decreasing, the Ministry of Home Affairs continues to strive to preserve and sustain the beauty of Kampong Ayer by implementing several initiatives, such as the Kampong Ayer Tourism Product or Package Enhancement Project, aimed at advancing tourism activities while enhancing the socio-economic level of the local community and making Kampong Ayer a tourism heritage site.

  2. The project targets the area from Kampong Bakut Berumput, Mukim Peramu to Kampong Pekan Lama, Mukim Burung Pingai, with the construction of a 460-meter Concrete Walkway, which was 100% completed in May 2023.

  3. The next phase is the construction of a Mini Wharf in front of the Cultural Gallery for the convenience of docking ships, which, to date, the Public Works Department is in the preparation and updating of designs before finalization with the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.

  4. Additionally, the current focus is on upgrading the main wooden and small junction bridges to concrete bridges along 36 kilometers. In this direction, the Brunei and Muara District Department has been and will continue to carry out phased repairs on existing facilities, including piers and bridges. From 2022 to 2025 (as of July 15, 2025), repairs on wooden bridges have been carried out along 9.648 kilometers, which is 27% of the total bridges in Kampong Ayer, with a cost of $997,329.00 through appointments to several local companies according to zones for these repair works. Meanwhile, in-house bridge repairs are also carried out by staff in the Kampong Ayer Section, Brunei and Muara District Department, with timber purchases made either through contracts or tenders.

  5. On this occasion, I am pleased to call upon shared responsibility, particularly for building and house owners, to ensure the beauty, cleanliness, and integrity of their respective residences are always preserved. This effort not only reflects the identity as responsible citizens but also contributes to the well-being of life, neighborhood harmony, and the sustainability of the residential environment.

That's all I can convey in answering the question. Thank you, Yang Berhormat Pehin Yang Di-Pertua.
