YANG BERHORMAT AWANG ABDUL AZIZ BIN HAJI HAMDAN asks the MINISTER OF EDUCATION to state what is the role of the Ministry in inculcating students to cultivate this heritage art and culture so that it continues to be learned at the primary, secondary and higher institution levels? This is to ensure that efforts to strengthen Brunei’s heritage art and culture do not become extinct with the passage of time.

First of all, kaola would like to record the highest appreciation and thanks to Yang Berhormat Yang Di-Pertua for the opportunity given to kaola to answer oral question PL252 submitted by Awang Abdul Aziz bin Haji Hamdan regarding the role of the Ministry in inculcating heritage art and culture at the primary, secondary and higher institution levels.
Kaola / I am pleased to share some of the initiatives in inculcating Brunei’s heritage art and culture in primary and secondary schools as well as higher education institutions, as follows:
- Academic exposure through the Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) and social studies subjects;
- Practical exposure through co-curricular activities such as Dendang Tari Melayu, Gulintangan, Islamic Poetry Declamation and Hadrah;
- Student participation in official national events such as the Celebration of the Birthday of Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam, the National Day Celebration of Negara Brunei Darussalam, and international participation such as performances of Tarian Brunei Asli at the Singapore Youth Festival 2025 and the The 26th International High School Arts Festival painting competition in Japan;
- The incorporation of the "Creativity" component in the Student Character Programme which enables students to explore the fields of arts and culture;
- The implementation of programmes such as the Global Discovery Programme (GDP) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam which combines academic learning with cultural experience;
- The organisation of quiz programmes, exhibitions, practical sessions and competitions such as the Pertandingan Sketsa Kata-kata Pantang Larang Orang Tua-Tua bagi Sekolah-Sekolah Rendah Senegara by the Secretariat Office of the Majlis Tertinggi Melayu Islam Beraja.
