YANG BERHORMAT AWANG LAWI BIN HAJI LAMAT

QUESTION:

Yang Berhormat Awang Lawi bin Haji Lamat asked the Minister of Religious Affairs to state whether the mosala wakaf near Kianggeh Bridge has been officially handed over to the ministry? What are the maintenance and periodic monitoring steps implemented to ensure the cleanliness, care, and prevent misuse of the waqf?

YANG BERHORMAT MENTERI HAL EHWAL UGAMA

ANSWER:

First and foremost, I would like to express my utmost appreciation to the donor who generously endowed the surau or musholla located in the Royal Wharf area, Bandar Seri Begawan near Kianggeh Bridge, which was constructed as a result of the initiative and endowment by a donor along with his family from kampong ayer. We also appreciate their contribution in ensuring the musholla is well-maintained by hiring a dedicated worker to look after the cleanliness and maintenance of the interior of the musholla, including utility costs, ever since it was used as a prayer facility for the public, especially visitors and tourists in the area.

The application for the Waqf Musholla Haji Abas Sulaiman has received approval from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council.

In the meeting of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council held on Saturday, 29 Rabiulawal 1434H corresponding to 12th January 2013, the Council took note and agreed to the proposal for the construction of a musholla in the area to allow the public to perform the five daily obligatory prayers. The surau's plan drawings were submitted and approved by the Council in that meeting.

Although the surau was built on the basis of waqf, the administration and management, including the cleanliness and maintenance of the exterior area of the musholla, are handled by the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department. Meanwhile, part of the area, including the parking area, is under the management contract of the privatized parking lot. Therefore, any efforts for daily physical maintenance fall under the jurisdiction of that department.
