QUESTION

Yang Berhormat Awang Lawi bin Haji Lamat

YANG BERHORMAT AWANG LAWI BIN HAJI LAMAT asks Yang Berhormat Menteri Hal Ehwal Ugama to state whether the waqf musholla near Kianggeh Bridge has been officially handed over to the ministry. What maintenance measures and periodic monitoring are carried out to ensure cleanliness, proper upkeep and to prevent misuse of the waqf?

ANSWER

Yang Berhormat Menteri Hal Ehwal Ugama

First of all, I would like to record the highest appreciation to the donor who was gracious enough to endow the surau or musholla located in the Dermaga Diraja area, Bandar Seri Begawan near Kianggeh Bridge, which was built through the initiative and endowment of a donor together with his family from Kampong Ayer, and also to appreciate their contribution in ensuring that the musholla is always well maintained, by employing a dedicated worker to look after the cleanliness and maintenance of the interior of the musholla including payment of utility usage costs, since it has been used as a place of worship facility for the public, especially visitors and tourists in the area.

As for the application for the waqf of Musholla Haji Abas Sulaiman, it has received approval from the Majlis Ugama Islam Brunei.

At the meeting of the Majlis Ugama Islam Brunei held on Saturday, 29 Rabiulawal 1434H corresponding to 12 January 2013, the Majlis took note of and agreed with the proposal to build a musholla in the area to enable the public to perform the five daily obligatory prayers. The surau plan drawing was submitted and approved by the Majlis at that meeting.

Although this surau was built on the basis of waqf, its administrative and management affairs, including aspects of cleanliness and upkeep for the external area of the musholla, are handled by the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department. Meanwhile, part of the area including the parking area is under a parking management contract that has been privatised. Therefore, any daily physical maintenance efforts are under the jurisdiction of that department.
