YANG BERHORMAT MINISTER OF PRIMARY RESOURCES AND TOURISM

ANSWER:

Yang Berhormat Pehin Yang Di-Pertua, permit kaola to answer the question from Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Isa Bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin (PL248) together with the question from Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Md. Salleh Bin Haji Othman (PL286) regarding efforts to encourage the younger generation/youth to engage in agriculture.

Currently, the Ministry has no plans to reintroduce the youth farmer program as before. To attract youth interest in agricultural ventures, the Ministry is organizing several programs focusing on youth involvement in agriculture and livestock farming. Among the programs implemented are:

  • Implementation of the Potential Youth Exposure Program to venture into technological agriculture, also one of the Ministry's efforts aimed at introducing agriculture as a profitable business.

  • Pilot Projects, which are trial and small-scale projects. The purpose of introducing this project is to provide opportunities for interested farmers and youth to explore the potential in agriculture. This project emphasizes the use of modern farming systems; the use of high-yield varieties or breeds; high-value yields; and is targeted for the export market.

  • As kaola previously mentioned, the Ministry is also in discussions with financial institutions to provide “start-up capital” as loans for the preparation of planting sites, such as land clearing and opening, and the development of high-tech system greenhouses, allowing youth to immediately start operations to generate income.

  • A new proposal, namely the ADAPT Program, is being planned by the Brunei Agricultural Farmers Association in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Agri-food to further enhance youth interest and involvement in the agriculture and fisheries industry. In addition, members of the farmers' association and successful farmers today are also expected to act as mentors to the youth in starting their farming enterprises. It is hoped that the involvement of existing and successful farmers as mentors in this program will be able to inject enthusiasm and interest among our youth to engage in the agriculture and fisheries industry.
