QUESTION
Yang Berhormat Awang Lawi bin Haji Lamat
YANG BERHORMAT AWANG LAWI BIN HAJI LAMAT asks Yang Berhormat Menteri Pendidikan to state whether the Ministry has conducted a comprehensive assessment regarding nutritional deficiencies among students in the Sungai Bunga area who have been reported to suffer from nutritional deficiencies, especially those from low-income families? Are there any plans to reintroduce the school feeding programme as support for Wawasan Brunei 2035?
ANSWER
Yang Berhormat Menteri Pendidikan
Thank you Yang Berhormat Awang Lawi bin Haji Lamat for the question raised.
To date, no specific comprehensive assessment has been carried out by the Ministry of Education regarding nutritional deficiencies among school students, including students of Tanjong Kindana Primary School in the Sungai Bunga area.
However, Tanjong Kindana Primary School (SRTK) is indeed a recipient school of food provision assistance through the Program Harapan dan Anak Harapan (PHAH) because more than thirty per cent (30%) of its students consist of recipients of the Annual Schooling Necessities Assistance (BKPT). This year, 46 schools with a total student population of 9,082 are recipients of the said assistance, including 115 SRTK students. This PHAH is in addition to the School Feeding Scheme (RPS), which has been implemented since 1953, with the provision of supplementary food and dairy. In 2025, 23,472 primary school and hostel students have benefited from this scheme.
This food assistance initiative is carried out to improve school attendance, students' physical development and wellbeing, especially in rural areas and hostels.
Apart from food assistance, the Ministry of Education also collaborates with the Ministry of Health in implementing the Fit4Good programme and enforcing the Healthy Canteen Guidelines in schools. This measure aims to create a school environment that supports a healthy lifestyle, encourages balanced nutrition, and prevents obesity and nutrition-related diseases among students.
