Yang Berhormat Dayang Hajah Safiah binti Sheikh Haji Abd. Salam
YANG BERHORMAT DAYANG HAJAH SAFIAH BINTI SHEIKH HAJI ABD. SALAM asks the Menteri Hal Ehwal Ugama to state the effectiveness of the Basic Mental Health Training Course for community leaders (imam, ustaz, daie) in increasing awareness and reducing the stigma of mental health from an Islamic perspective. How is the assessment conducted to measure its effectiveness?
ANSWER
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has collaborated with the Ministry of Health in implementing the Basic Mental Health Training Course for Community Leaders, which involved some imams, ustaz and daie under the supervision of this Ministry. This course aims to increase awareness and knowledge regarding mental health, particularly among participants, through learning/guidance on basic knowledge related to mental health and psychology from the Islamic perspective as well as medical science. In addition, the participants were also given exposure to counselling techniques, psychological approaches and holistic and integrated treatments. This course is one of the actions under the National Mental Health Action Plan of Negara Brunei Darussalam 2022-2025.
Based on the feedback from participants who attended this course, alhamdulillah, it has given a positive impact in increasing awareness and understanding as well as reducing negative perceptions towards mental health among the course participants (imam, ustaz and daie) in particular and the general public in general.
In this regard, many benefits have been obtained in line with its implementation objectives as follows:
I. Increasing Awareness
The participants were able to realise and understand mental health issues from the perspective of Islam and medical science, enabling them to become agents of change in society.
In addition, they were able to feel empathy towards those suffering from mental health problems because they were directly involved in going to the field to visit the Mental Health Unit, interacting and meeting with patients and seeing for themselves the facilities provided by the Government.
II. Reducing Negative Perceptions
The participants were also able to understand that mental health is part of the holistic well-being taught in Islam. They can help reduce negative perceptions regarding mental illness and apply the knowledge gained during the course.
III. Counselling Techniques
In addition, the participants were given exposure to counselling techniques and Islamic psychological approaches which indirectly enable them to provide more effective support to anyone in need and to apply the knowledge gained during the course in their work as well as in daily life.
