Answer for Oral Question PL230

QUESTION

Yang Berhormat Dayang Chong Chin Yee

YANG BERHORMAT DAYANG CHONG CHIN YEE requests the MENTERI PEMBANGUNAN to state the status and timeline for the provision of a pedestrian route connecting Gadong with Kiulap, as well as whether temporary safety measures such as pedestrian crossings, lighting and directional signs around the Jame' 'Asr Roundabout will be implemented ahead of Visit Brunei Year 2027.

ANSWER

Yang Berhormat Menteri Pembangunan

The Ministry of Development welcomes Yang Berhormat’s concern regarding pedestrian facilities connecting the Gadong Area with Kiulap, as well as pedestrian safety, particularly in preparation for Visit Brunei Year 2027.

For Yang Berhormat’s information, physical pedestrian connectivity between the Gadong Commercial Area and Kiulap is already in place. This route connects:

  1. The Gadong Commercial Area via Jalan Pasar Gadong towards the Jame' 'Asr Roundabout;
  2. The Jame' 'Asr Roundabout, which is equipped with pedestrian walkways around it; and
  3. Jalan Jame' 'Asr onwards to the Kiulap Commercial Area, which is also supported by existing pedestrian bridges for safely crossing the road.

The Ministry understands that greater awareness and clearer directional guidance are essential to facilitate the movement of the public and tourists. In this regard, the Ministry of Development, through the Public Works Department, is focusing on several improvement measures:

  1. Installing pedestrian directional signs at strategic locations to facilitate members of the public and tourists in identifying and using this connecting route.
  2. Installing pedestrian signs and adding pedestrian traffic lights around the Jame' 'Asr Roundabout to provide greater comfort and confidence to pedestrians.

The installation of directional signs and improvement of these safety facilities are scheduled to be carried out in phases and are expected to be fully completed by the end of November 2026, as an early preparation ahead of the commencement of Visit Brunei Year 2027.
