YANG BERHORMAT AWANG MOHAMMAD BIN ABDULLAH @ LIM SWEE ANN asked the MINISTER OF HEALTH to state, regarding the collection of medication by patients undergoing follow-up treatment, whether patients are required to collect their medication only at the Health Centre according to their respective catchment areas or whether they are allowed to collect it at any Health Centre or Hospital that is more conveniently accessible.

Patients are not required to collect their medication only at the Health Centre according to their respective catchment areas.

In general, patients may choose to collect their medication, including their monthly follow-up medication, at any government hospital or health centre that is more convenient and suitable for them.

To further improve convenience for patients, the Ministry of Health also provides several value-added pharmacy services, including:

  • Easy Collect service;
  • Autorefill service; and
  • A medication delivery service through a company appointed by the Ministry of Health at a reasonable fee.

These services were introduced to facilitate patients in obtaining their medication supplies more flexibly, reduce the need to wait at pharmacy counters and improve continuity of treatment.

For certain specialised medication prescribed by specialist clinics, stocks are usually kept at specific hospitals due to their limited use. However, if patients wish to collect such medication at their preferred health centre, the pharmacy will coordinate the preparation of the stock at the relevant facility.

The Ministry of Health also conducts discussion and briefing sessions with Medical Officers on Good Prescribing Practice in the BruHIMS system, with the objective of improving the process of prescribing patients' medication and reducing confusion in patients' prescriptions.

As a contingency, Pharmacists or Dispensers from other pharmacy service sections, such as Inpatient Pharmacy or the Pharmacy Regulatory Division, will be assigned to pharmacies requiring assistance to improve medication collection waiting times, where necessary.

The Ministry of Health's aim is to ensure that every patient has easy, safe and continuous access to the medication they require through the delivery of more flexible pharmacy services, without compromising the quality of care and the safety of medication use.

The Ministry of Health will continue to strengthen the delivery of pharmacy services that are more flexible, accessible and patient-centred, to ensure that every patient receives the medication supplies they require safely, continuously and with quality.
