Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abd. Rahman bin Haji Ibrahim

YANG BERHORMAT PEHIN ORANG KAYA LAILA SETIA DATO SERI SETIA AWANG HAJI ABDUL RAHMAN BIN HAJI IBRAHIM asked MENTERI EKONOMI, PERDAGANGAN DAN INDUSTRI to state the status of the establishment of the Brunei Integrated Analytical Laboratory, particularly regarding the strategic outcomes that can be achieved by local entrepreneurs, especially in terms of faster processes, reduced business costs and increased export opportunities, as we understand that this Laboratory will provide faster testing services covering food safety, DNA and halal verification requirements.

ANSWER

Yang Berhormat Menteri Ekonomi, Perdagangan dan Industri

The Brunei Integrated Analytical Laboratory is a commercial joint venture operated through a combination of expertise from Australia and a local company. The laboratory will provide services that meet local and international market demands, including testing requirements related to food safety, microbiology, molecular biology and other related fields.

Once operational, the laboratory is expected to expedite the testing process, reduce the need to send samples overseas, and lower shipping and logistics costs for local entrepreneurs. This facility will also assist local entrepreneurs in meeting product safety, quality and compliance requirements, as well as improve their preparedness to enter export markets. The detailed scope of services to be provided, including food safety testing, DNA analysis and requirements related to halal verification, will be determined by the relevant agencies, including the Brunei Darussalam Food Authority (BDFA).

To date, the facility lease agreement has been signed by the project owner, and preparatory work is being carried out, including the licensing process, efforts to obtain ISO 17025 accreditation, equipment installation and workforce recruitment. The laboratory is targeted to commence operations in October 2026, with the first phase focusing on microbiology and molecular biology testing services.
