QUESTION:

YANG BERHORMAT PEHIN ORANG KAYA LAILA SETIA DATO SERI SETIA AWANG HAJI ABD. RAHMAN BIN HAJI IBRAHIM asks the MINISTER OF EDUCATION to elaborate on the Ministry of Education's plan to update the curriculum to adapt it to current developments in technology, innovation, and others, at all levels of education. This is in view of several neighboring countries having introduced Coding subjects in primary school curricula to ensure their students are 'industry-ready,' considering that this skill is in-demand and marketable, as observed where some local private schools have also implemented it.

Thank you for the question posed. The Ministry of Education extends the highest gratitude to the Command of Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam during the Official Opening Ceremony of the First Meeting of the 21st Legislative Council 2025, urging us to make transformations in enhancing the productivity and outcomes of the nation across sectors including Education, taking into account the rapid advancement of technology.

In this regard, in line with the Digital Economy Master Plan 2025 and the Ministry of Education Digital Transformation Plan (2023-2027), the Ministry of Education will continue to implement the following initiatives:

i. At the primary and secondary school level, students have been exposed to the use of IT and coding skills across various subjects. Various technology skill programs such as the "STEAM for Future" training modules also offer coding skill training using Scratch and Magnet Code; ii. At the higher education level, several programs are offered that contribute to the digital economy's development, covering certificate to post-graduate levels including micro-credentials. These programs encompass various ICT elements like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud and Networking, and Data Analytics.

With the technology skills nurtured early on, several innovation achievements have been attained by students as follows:

i. Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2024 won by Rimba III Primary School, Berakas Secondary School, and Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) in their respective categories; ii. Young Inventors Challenge (YIC) competition in Malaysia where Berakas Secondary School has received the award for three consecutive years. All these projects resulted from coding usage; iii. IBTE won Gold in the 'Internet Marketing' skill field in the Belt and Road International Skills Competition 2024; iv. Coursera awarded Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) the AI Innovation Award for the Asia Pacific Region 2024. The student certification in the Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI) Program managed by the School of Digital Science (SDS), UBD has been recognized as a leader in AI education and innovation by industry experts IBM and Google. Besides students, several academic staff from higher education institutions also received international recognition such as the UL Research Institutes-ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women 2024, the ASEAN-Japan Cyber Security Community Alliance award, and the ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge award.
