YANG BERHORMAT AWANG ABDUL AZIZ BIN HAJI HAMDAN

QUESTION:

YANG BERHORMAT AWANG ABDUL AZIZ BIN HAJI HAMDAN asked the MINISTER OF DEVELOPMENT to state the plans for upgrading the roads and drainage systems in the National Housing Relocation area in terms of safety and maintenance to ensure they are more user-friendly.

YANG BERHORMAT MENTERI PEMBANGUNAN

ANSWER:

  • Thank you, Yang Berhormat Yang Di-Pertua. Thank you to Yang Berhormat Awang Abdul Aziz bin Haji Hamdan for the concern especially towards the maintenance of critical infrastructure in housing areas nationwide.

  • The Ministry of Development remains committed to maintaining road and drainage infrastructure in the Rancangan Perumahan Negara (RPN) and Skim Tanah Kurnia Rakyat Jati (STKRJ) areas in all four districts. By 2025, 17 RPN areas and 15 STKRJ areas comprising more than 30,000 housing units are managed by the Housing Development Department. To ensure these facilities remain well-maintained, 25 maintenance contracts worth BND 2.2 million have been allocated, which among others involve:

    • Maintenance of drains and drainage systems: Cleaning and rebuilding to reduce the risk of flooding.
    • Grass cutting: Conducted regularly to ensure drivers' visibility is not obstructed and to enhance area cleanliness.
  • Meanwhile, the repair and resurfacing of asphalt roads in national housing areas are included in 3 maintenance contracts of the Department of Roads totaling BND 4.5 million.

  • Additionally, the Drainage and Sewerage Department has allocated approximately BND1.5 million to upgrade drainage systems to prevent flash floods, with the construction of larger drains, culverts, and additional sumps at flood-hit locations at Wasai Limuru, RPN Tanah Jambu (BND 47,470); Jalan Binglu, RPN Tanah Jambu (BND 179,643); Jalan Sungai Cerana, RPN Mengkubau (BND 463,000) and RPN Bukit Beruang (BND 858,000).

  • At the same time, the National Development Plan 12 (RKN 12) also focuses on the overall improvement of medium and long-term road infrastructure totaling BND28 million, including upgrading main roads in RPN & STKRJ areas such as Perpindahan Lambak Kanan, RPN & STKRJ Rimba, RPN Rataie, STKRJ Tungku, RPN Bukit Beruang and STKRJ Telisai for resurfacing, road widening, and intersection improvements to ease in-and-out traffic.

  • These plans reflect the government's ongoing efforts to ensure national housing remains comfortable, safe, and of quality in line with the aspirations of Wawasan Brunei 2035.
