YANG BERHORMAT DAYANG HAJAH SAFIAH BINTI SHEIKH HAJI ABD SALAM

QUESTION:

YANG BERHORMAT DAYANG HAJAH SAFIAH BINTI SHEIKH HAJI ABD SALAM requests the MENTERI HAL EHWAL DALAM NEGERI to state the Ministry's steps to expedite the development of conducive infrastructure in strategic areas identified for business purposes for youth and the elderly, which are also tourist attractions like Jerudong, Gadong, and Kupang, where currently the poor infrastructure in these areas hinders traders from thriving and tarnishes the country's image.

YANG BERHORMAT MENTERI HAL EHWAL DALAM NEGERI

ANSWER:

Yang Berhormat Pehin Yang Di-Pertua and Your Honourable Members, thank you to Yang Berhormat Dayang Hajah Safiah binti Sheikh Haji Abd Salam for the question posed.

Regarding the issue raised about expediting the development of conducive infrastructure in strategic areas for business purposes for youth and the elderly, which are also tourist attractions like Jerudong, Gadong, and Kupang. It cannot be denied that the mentioned structures are buildings that have been constructed for several decades, such as Pasar Jerudong in 2002, Pasar Gadong in 1985, and Tamu Kupang around the 1980s. With such an old age of the buildings, it certainly requires thorough and continuous maintenance.

Alhamdulillah, maintenance work on these buildings has been carried out from time to time. For Pasar Jerudong, works carried out include roof replacement, toilet repairs, replacing iron fences and more, as well as cleaning and tree pruning along the road leading to the boat landing area. For Pasar Gadong, among others, street light repairs, drain cover, water pipe and door repairs, and demolition of damaged abandoned structures have been conducted. Meanwhile, at Tamu Kupang, stall lamp changes have been carried out by the Department itself.

As far as Kaola can share in this august house, discussions have been held with the relevant Government agencies in the effort to upgrade the infrastructure of the aforementioned buildings. Alhamdulillah, a company has been appointed as the Facility Manager to ensure that the conditions at Pasar Pelbagai Barangan in Gadong and Tamu Kianggeh, managed by the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department, are clean and conducive. At the same time, Tamu Selera is in the process of upgrading, aimed at providing comfort to local traders and concurrently attracting tourists and the public to dine.

Insha Allah, facility management services for public toilets under the control of the Kementerian Hal Ehwal Dalam Negeri and its Departments, such as control posts, several departments within this Ministry, markets under the rule of the Brunei and Muara District Department, and the hall in the Tutong District will be implemented using the 2025/2026 Financial Year allocation. Meanwhile, other public toilets are currently maintained by companies appointed through each Department's allocation and Insha Allah, the cleaning and maintenance of these public toilets will be included under a Facility Management Service contract under the Kementerian Hal Ehwal Dalam Negeri.

This is what Kaola can convey in response to the concerned question. Thank you, Yang Berhormat Pehin Yang Di-Pertua.
