QUESTION:
YANG BERHORMAT DAYANG CHONG CHIN YEE asked the MINISTER OF TRANSPORTATION AND INFO-COMMUNICATIONS whether the Ministry of Transportation and Info-communications will consider adding the word ‘Digital’ to its name to reflect the country's commitment to digital transformation, in line with Wawasan Brunei 2035, and to strengthen the country's identity as a Smart Nation.
YANG BERHORMAT MENTERI PENGANGKUTAN DAN INFOKOMUNIKASI
ANSWER:
Thank you for the suggestion put forward by Yang Berhormat Dayang Chong Chin Yee to modernize the name of the Ministry of Transportation and Info-communications by adding the word ‘Digital’.
-
First and foremost, allow peramba/kaola/me to briefly share about the background role and main responsibilities of the Ministry of Transportation and Info-communications.
-
For Yang Berhormat's information, on December 15, 2018, the name of this Ministry was approved to be changed from the Ministry of Communications to the Ministry of Transportation and Info-communications (MTIC).
-
This is to take into account the increasingly prominent role of ICT at that time. As Yang Berhormat is aware, aside from digital affairs, this Ministry is also responsible for the transportation sector which includes land, sea, and air; the infocommunications sector; postal services; meteorology; science, technology, and innovation as well as cybersecurity.
-
At the same time, developments related to the digital field are also spearheaded by the Digital Economy Council, while cybersecurity affairs fall under the National Cybersecurity Committee (JKKS).
-
However, following the end of the Digital Economy Master Plan period in 2025, this is an opportunity to assess changes to the structure of the Brunei Digital Economy Council and also to rationalize the roles of agencies and bodies involved in the country's digital efforts. Therefore, the suggestion put forward by Yang Berhormat is acknowledged and will be considered for its suitability later.
That's all, Yang Berhormat Yang Di-Pertua, and thank you.
