YANG BERHORMAT AWANG LAWI BIN HAJI LAMAT

QUESTION:

YANG BERHORMAT AWANG LAWI BIN HAJI LAMAT asked the MINISTER AT THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE whether the Government can look into the possibility of adding an additional public holiday to allow the people to perform the sacrificial rites more orderly, avoid congestion at slaughter centers, and ensure more efficient distribution of meat, considering that the sacrificial rites can be performed over four days.

YANG BERHORMAT MINISTER AT THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE

ANSWER:

Regarding the suggestion by Yang Berhormat about adding an additional public holiday to allow the public to perform the sacrificial rites. This matter needs to be viewed holistically, taking into account the current regulations related to holidays in the public sector.

As is well known, the number of public holidays in a year in Negara Brunei Darussalam is considered adequate at present, which includes a public holiday for the celebration of Hari Raya Aidiladha for one day, to give room for public servants and the private sector, particularly those of the Islamic faith, to also participate in the celebration of Hari Raya Aidiladha.

When compared to neighboring countries, Negara Brunei Darussalam has 15 public holidays, equivalent to Malaysia and Cambodia, and higher than some ASEAN countries such as Singapore (11 days), Laos (9 days), and Vietnam (11 days).

For the public sector, the existing leave regulations provide for annual leave for officers and staff according to their respective grades. In this context, if there is a need to perform the sacrificial rites privately, the officers and staff concerned can use the annual leave allocated according to the regulations currently in force.
