YANG BERHORMAT AWANG LAU HOW TECK

QUESTION:

YANG BERHORMAT AWANG LAU HOW TECK requests the MINISTER OF HEALTH to state the Ministry's plans in considering the establishment or official support of the National Pharmacists Association. This matter can help strengthen cooperation between the public and private pharmaceutical sectors to ensure regulatory harmonization, open opportunities for professional development, and unify representation for pharmacists throughout the industry.

YANG BERHORMAT MINISTER OF HEALTH

ANSWER:

The Ministry of Health acknowledges the importance of establishing the National Pharmacists Association, which is as significant as the establishment of other health professions. The Ministry appreciates the important role that professional associations can play in strengthening the pharmacy profession and advancing practice standards, fostering professional development, and providing unified representation for pharmacists in every sector. In this regard, the Ministry of Health wishes to inform that plans for the establishment of the National Pharmacists Association have already begun and are currently at the stage of reviewing the draft constitution for the association.

To ensure this NGO association can be realized on a solid foundation, the Ministry of Health will remain committed to supporting its establishment; and subsequently provide support in the association’s activities such as Continuous Professional Development activities for pharmacists across the country. Another area where the proposed association can play a crucial role is in promoting ethical standards and professionalism in pharmacy practice. According to statistics in 2024, the number of pharmacists working in the public sector is 60, while those in the private sector are 46. The Ministry of Health recognizes that the establishment of a viable professional association requires continued support and active involvement of the professionals themselves. Therefore, the Ministry of Health through the Department of Pharmaceutical Services and the Pharmacy Board of Brunei Darussalam will continue to work closely with the pharmacy community both domestically and internationally to ensure that the association to be established truly represents the interests and aspirations of pharmacists in Negara Brunei Darussalam, and can effectively contribute to the enhancement of pharmacy practice and healthcare in general. With the cooperation and commitment of all stakeholders, the Ministry is confident that the National Pharmacists Association will become a reality in the near future.
